This territory operates under a unique administrative structure where the French state coexists with three traditional kingdoms: Uvea, Sigave, and Alo. These monarchs are still formally recognized and play a direct role in the local government, receiving subsidies from the French Republic. Currency
The official currency is the CFP Franc, identified by the ISO code XPF. Originally introduced in 1945 following the Bretton Woods Agreement, the currency's name stands for 'Colonies Françaises du Pacifique' and was specifically created to protect these territories from the economic devaluations affecting the mainland French Franc.
Flag symbolism
The unofficial but widely used flag features a red field symbolizing courage and the historical heritage of the local people. In the lower fly, a white square contains four triangles arranged into a cross shape, representing the three traditional kingdoms of the islands and the role of the Catholic faith. The French Tricolour is placed in the canton to signify the territory's status as an overseas collectivity of France.

The unofficial emblem closely mirrors the design of the local flag, featuring a red shield with the four white triangles intersecting at the center. This specific arrangement of triangles, known as a 'cross patty,' was adopted from the emblems used by 19th-century Catholic missions and early local monarchs.
