Fun fact

Uruguay is home to the world’s first-ever FIFA World Cup, which it hosted and won in 1930. The country boasts a unique legalized status for recreational cannabis, becoming the first nation in the modern era to create a fully regulated state-controlled market. It also generates nearly all of its electricity from renewable sources, particularly wind and hydropower, making it a global leader in green energy. Furthermore, the nation has a quirky tradition where citizens eat gnocchi on the 29th of every month for good luck.

Currency

The national currency is the Uruguayan Peso, identified by the ISO code UYU. While the 'Peso' has been the name of the currency since the colonial era, it has undergone several revaluations, including the introduction of the 'Nuevo Peso' in 1975 to combat hyperinflation. Historically, Uruguay was so economically stable in the early 20th century that the peso was once considered as strong as the British pound sterling.

Flag symbolism

The flag features nine horizontal stripes of white and blue, which represent the original nine departments that composed the country at the time of its independence. In the upper hoist corner, the 'Sun of May' serves as a national emblem representing May Revolutions and the Inca sun god Inti. The golden sun features alternating straight and wavy rays, symbolizing both the radiant heat and the movement of the light. This design was heavily inspired by the flag of Argentina, reflecting the shared revolutionary history of the River Plate region.

Emblem history

The coat of arms is an oval shield divided into four quarters, topped by the rising Sun of May which denotes the emergence of the Uruguayan nation. The scales in the upper left represent equality and justice, while the depiction of Montevideo Hill in the upper right symbolizes strength and defense. In the lower sections, a galloping horse stands for liberty and a golden ox represents economic plenty derived from agriculture. The shield is framed by laurel and olive branches tied with a blue ribbon, signifying the victory and peace achieved through national sovereignty.
