Turkmenistan is home to the Darvaza Gas Crater, a massive cavern that has been burning continuously since Soviet engineers ignited it in 1971. Known locally as the Gates of Hell, the site was originally a drilling rig that collapsed into a natural gas pocket. Travelers visit the remote Karakum Desert just to witness the surreal orange glow of the flames visible from miles away at night.
Currency
The official currency is the Turkmenistani manat, identified by the ISO code TMT. It was introduced in 1993 to replace the Russian ruble, and the current 'New Manat' series features portraits of prominent historical figures and iconic architectural monuments to celebrate the nation's independence.
Flag symbolism
The flag features a vertical red stripe near the hoist containing five intricate carpet guls, which represent the five major tribes of the nation. These patterns are unique in world vexillology and emphasize the country's ancient weaving traditions as a core part of its identity. The green background and white crescent moon signify hope and Islam, while the five stars represent the five regions of the country and the five senses.
Emblem history
