El Salvador is the only country in the world to have adopted Bitcoin as a legal tender alongside the US Dollar, a move intended to modernize its financial system. It is also famously known as the Land of Volcanoes because it sits on a highly active tectonic region with over twenty volcanoes, some of which still pose a regular threat of eruption. Interestingly, despite being the smallest country in Central America, it is the only one in the region without a coastline on the Caribbean Sea.
Currency
The official currencies are the United States Dollar (USD) and Bitcoin (BTC). El Salvador made global headlines in 2021 by becoming the first sovereign nation in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. Historically, the country used the Colón, named after Christopher Columbus, from 1892 until it was replaced by the dollar in 2001.
Flag symbolism
The flag features two cobalt blue horizontal bands that represent the two oceans surrounding Central America, the Pacific and the Atlantic. The central white band symbolizes peace and prosperity among the citizenry. Unlike many other nations, El Salvador actually utilizes three different versions of its flag depending on the context, with the most formal version prominently displaying the national coat of arms in the center.
Emblem history
The national emblem features a central triangle that honors both the five original provinces of the United Provinces of Central America and the classic symbols of liberty. Inside the triangle, five green volcanoes rise from the sea, while a Phrygian cap on a staff glows with the light of independence. Surrounding the triangle are five national flags and a laurel wreath divided into 14 segments, each representing one of the country's administrative departments.
