Flag symbolism
The flag of Sierra Leone consists of three horizontal bands of green, white, and blue. Emblem history
The coat of arms was granted in 1960 and features a shield supported by two golden lions, which refers to the country's name, meaning 'Lion Mountain.' Within the shield, a jagged line separates a green field representing the mountains from a blue and white wavy section symbolizing the sea. Three torches sit atop the shield to represent the pursuit of knowledge and education, while the motto 'Unity, Freedom, Justice' reflects the nation's core ideals upon gaining independence from British rule.
