Qatar is home to a unique natural phenomenon where 'singing' sand dunes produce a low-frequency hum or roar caused by the friction of sliding grains. This acoustic marvel occurs in the desert south of Doha and is best heard during dry conditions when the wind moves the sand across the slopes. The country also features inland seas where the ocean meets the desert, creating a rare ecosystem that supports diverse marine life. Additionally, the nation's traditional sport of falconry is so prestigious that birds are frequently issued their own passports to ensure safe travel on commercial flights.
Currency
The official currency is the Qatari Riyal, denoted by the ISO code QAR. Before introducing its own currency in 1973, Qatar famously used the Indian Rupee and later the Saudi Riyal as legal tender during various periods of its economic history.
Flag symbolism
The flag consists of a white vertical band on the hoist side and a maroon band on the fly side, separated by a nine-pointed serrated edge. The white color represents the international symbol of peace, while the deep maroon hue reflects the country's historical role as a major producer of purple dye derived from murex shellfish. The nine points of the zigzag line signify Qatar's status as the ninth member of the 'reconciled Emirates' following the 1916 Anglo-Qatari Treaty. This unique serrated design was formally adopted in 1971 to distinguish the nation's identity from similar neighboring flags.
Emblem history
The national emblem of Qatar, redesigned in 2022, features iconic symbols representing the nation's maritime and terrestrial heritage. It displays two crossed white curved swords, known as scimitars, which symbolize protection, strength, and the defense of the state. These swords frame a traditional dhow sailing vessel and two palm trees, highlighting the historical importance of the pearl trade and the resilience of the desert environment. This minimalist update replaced a more complex circular seal, focusing on a clean aesthetic that honors the founding fathers' vision and the country’s ancestral roots.
