The modern residents of this territory are primarily the direct descendants of the mutineers from the HMS Bounty and the Tahitian companions who accompanied them in 1790. For decades, the community remained entirely hidden from the world until it was accidentally rediscovered by American whaling ships in the early 19th century. Because of this unique lineage, the islanders developed a distinct language known as Pitkern, which is a fascinating linguistic blend of 18th-century English and Tahitian. Today, the territory remains the least populous national jurisdiction in the world, maintaining a lifestyle deeply connected to its maritime heritage.
Currency
The official currency is the New Zealand Dollar, known by the ISO code NZD. Before adopting this currency, the islanders relied heavily on a barter system and the sale of unique, hand-stamped postal markers to passing ships for trade revenue.
Flag symbolism
The flag follows the Blue Ensign design, featuring the British Union Jack in the canton to signify its status as a British Overseas Territory. On the fly side, the coat of arms displays a green shield containing a yellow anchor and a Bible, which represent the island's naval origins and the role of faith in the community's survival. The green background of the shield symbolizes the lush, volcanic soil of the island that sustained the original settlers. Gold and blue mantling flows around the shield, mirroring the surrounding Pacific Ocean and the wealth of natural resources found within it.
Emblem history
The coat of arms, which serves as the central badge on the flag, was officially granted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1969 to honor the unique history of the settlement. The prominent anchor featured on the shield is widely believed to represent the HMS Bounty, the vessel that brought the first permanent inhabitants to the island before it was burned in Bounty Bay. Resting above the shield is a floral crest depicting a Pitcairn wheelbarrow and a slip of miro plant, signifying the importance of agriculture and local craftsmanship. This emblem serves as a permanent tribute to the resourcefulness of the mutineers who turned a remote rock into a self-sufficient home.
