Mozambique is the only country in the world to feature a modern assault rifle on its national flag, which symbolizes defense and vigilance. The nation is also home to the Bazaruto Archipelago, a marine park that protects the rare dugong, a cousin of the manatee often mistaken for mermaids by early sailors. Its coastline stretches for over 2,500 kilometers and features unique colonial architecture blended with local coral stone construction. Currency
The official currency is the Mozambican metical, designated by the ISO code MZN. It was introduced in 1980 to replace the colonial Portuguese escudo as a symbol of economic independence. In 2006, the currency underwent a significant redenomination, where 1,000 'old' meticais became one 'new' metical to combat the effects of long-term inflation.
Flag symbolism
The flag features five horizontal stripes of green, black, and yellow, separated by thin white borders, with a red triangle on the hoist side. Green represents the richness of the land, while black stands for the African continent and yellow symbolizes the nation's mineral wealth. Inside the red triangle, a yellow star represents internationalism and is overlaid with a rifle, a hoe, and an open book. These three elements represent defense, agriculture, and education as the primary pillars of the nation's development.
Emblem history

It features a cogwheel representing the working class and industry, surrounding a central map of the country and an open book. A field of sugarcane and a stalk of corn frame the center to honor the importance of the peasantry and agricultural labor. At the top, a red star represents the revolutionary spirit, and the emblem sits atop a red ribbon bearing the name of the republic.
