Cambodia is home to the world’s only river that reverses its flow direction twice a year. During the rainy season, the Tonle Sap River changes course to fill the massive lake of the same name, then flows back toward the Mekong in the dry season. This unique natural phenomenon is celebrated annually with the Bon Om Touk water festival, featuring massive dragon boat races.
Currency
The official currency of Cambodia is the Riel, designated by the ISO code KHR. During the Khmer Rouge regime between 1975 and 1980, the country made the radical move of completely abolishing money and a central banking system before the Riel was eventually reintroduced.
Flag symbolism
The flag of Cambodia is unique as the only national flag in the world to feature a specific building, the 12th-century monument of Angkor Wat. The temple stands in white to represent the state religion of Buddhism and the value of integrity. Top and bottom blue stripes symbolize the nation's royalty, while the central red band represents the bravery and determination of the Cambodian people.
Emblem history
The Royal Arms of Cambodia features two mythical creatures, a gajasingha and a singha, which serve as protectors of the realm while holding ceremonial umbrellas. At the center is a royal taj or crown, resting above a sword that signifies the sovereign's authority and ancient Khmer traditions. This emblem was originally established during the French protectorate era and was officially reinstated in 1993 after the restoration of the monarchy.
