Indonesia is home to the world's largest volcanic lake, Lake Toba, which was formed by a supervolcanic eruption approximately 74,000 years ago. This massive event was so powerful it triggered a global volcanic winter and significantly impacted human evolution according to some theories. Today, the lake features an island named Samosir that is roughly the size of Singapore and serves as a unique cultural hub for the Batak people.
Currency
The official currency is the Indonesian rupiah, denoted by the ISO code IDR. Following the declaration of independence in 1945, the country issued its first national currency, the Oeang Republik Indonesia (ORI), to replace the Dutch and Japanese currencies then in circulation. This move was a critical step in asserting economic sovereignty and national identity during the revolutionary period.
Flag symbolism
The national flag, known as Sang Saka Merah-Putih, features two equal horizontal bands of red and white. The red represents courage and the human body, while the white symbolizes purity and the human spirit. These colors are deeply rooted in the history of the region and were used by the Majapahit Empire in the 13th century before being revived for the independence movement.
Emblem history
The national emblem, the Garuda Pancasila, depicts a mythical golden bird inspired by ancient Hindu-Buddhist traditions across the archipelago. The central shield contains five symbols representing the Pancasila, the foundational philosophy of the state, including a star, a chain, a banyan tree, a bull's head, and sprigs of rice and cotton. Gripped in the Garuda's talons is a scroll inscribed with the national motto, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, which translates to Unity in Diversity.
