Honduras is home to the mysterious 'Lluvia de Peces' or Rain of Fish, a phenomenon that reportedly occurs annually in the city of Yoro. During heavy summer storms, hundreds of small silver fish are said to appear on the ground after the rain subsides, providing a feast for the local residents. While scientists suggest these fish might be forced above ground from subterranean rivers by heavy flooding, the event remains a deeply celebrated cultural tradition. The city even hosts an annual festival to commemorate this unique meteorological occurrence.
Currency
The official currency is the Lempira, denoted by the ISO code HNL. It was introduced in 1931 to replace the peso and is named after a 16th-century indigenous leader of the Lenca people who famously resisted Spanish conquest.
Flag symbolism
The flag features three horizontal stripes, with two blue bands framing a central white band to represent the land sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Five blue stars are arranged in an 'X' pattern in the center, representing the five original members of the Federal Republic of Central America. While the union dissolved in the 19th century, the stars signify the hope that these nations—Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica—might one day reunite. The blue color was recently updated to a turquoise shade to more accurately reflect the historical maritime heritage of the nation.
Emblem history
The national coat of arms is centered around an equilateral triangle containing two towering castles and a rainbow, symbolizing liberty and hope. An Egyptian-style pyramid represents the heights of the nation's justice and its ancient cultural roots. Encircling the central shield are two cornucopias spilling over with fruit and flowers, which represent the country's vast natural wealth and agricultural fertility. The emblem is further adorned with a quiver of arrows, honoring the indigenous Lenca people and their resistance against colonial forces.
