Estonia is widely recognized as one of the most advanced digital societies in the world, having pioneered a system where nearly all government services are available online. Since 2005, it has allowed its citizens to cast their votes in national elections over the internet from any location globally. The country is also the birthplace of major tech innovations like Skype and was the first to implement a nationwide electronic ID system. This digital-first culture even extends to education, where coding is taught to children as young as seven years old.
Currency
The official currency is the Euro (EUR), which was adopted on January 1, 2011. Before the Euro, Estonia used the Kroon (EEK), a currency that was famously pegged to the Deutsche Mark in 1992 to stabilize the economy after decades of Soviet occupation.
Flag symbolism
The Estonian flag consists of three equal horizontal bands of blue, black, and white, known locally as the 'sinimustvalge'. The blue represents the vaulted sky above the native land, reflecting the loyalty and shared destiny of the people. The black stripe symbolizes the soil of the homeland and the dark jackets of the traditional peasantry, while also serving as a reminder of past hardships endured. Finally, the white band represents the pursuit of enlightenment, virtue, and the hope for a brighter future filled with snow-covered landscapes.
Emblem history
The coat of arms of Estonia features three blue lions 'passant guardant' on a golden shield, a design that dates back to the 13th century. These lions were originally derived from the coat of arms of King Valdemar II of Denmark, who ruled parts of northern Estonia during the Middle Ages. The shield is traditionally framed by two golden oak branches, which symbolize the country's strength, endurance, and deep-rooted natural heritage. Although banned during the Soviet period, this emblem was officially restored in 1990 as a powerful link to Estonia's medieval history and its initial 1918 declaration of independence.
