Flag symbolism
The flag features three equal horizontal bands of red, white, and black, which are the colors of the Arab Liberation flag. Red represents the period before the 1952 Revolution, characterized by the struggle against the monarchy and British colonialism. The white band symbolizes the peaceful nature of the revolution itself and an optimistic outlook for the future. Black serves as a reminder of the historical period of colonial oppression that the nation overcame to achieve its sovereignty.
Emblem history
The central emblem on the flag is the Eagle of Saladin, a heraldic shield-bearing eagle that dates back to the 12th century. This powerful bird of prey was the personal symbol of the first Sultan of Egypt and Syria, representing strength, authority, and Arab unity. On its chest, the eagle carries a shield, and its talons hold a scroll inscribed with the country's official name in Kufic script. This emblem was formally adopted following the 1952 Revolution to replace the previous royal coat of arms, signaling a new era of Republican governance.
