Currency
The official currency of the Republic of Ecuador is the United States Dollar, known by the ISO code USD. The country underwent a process of 'dollarization' in 2000 following a severe banking crisis and hyperinflation that rendered the former currency, the Sucre, virtually worthless.
Flag symbolism
The horizontal tricolor consists of yellow, blue, and red bands, with the yellow stripe being twice the width of the others to symbolize the nation's immense natural wealth and fertile land. The blue band represents the Pacific Ocean and the clear skies above, linking the coastal identity to the heavens. The red stripe honors the blood of the heroes who fought for independence during the various revolutionary battles against Spanish rule. Centered on the stripes is the national coat of arms, which distinguishes the official flag from the otherwise identical civil flag of Colombia.
Emblem history
The coat of arms features an oval shield depicting Mount Chimborazo and the Guayas River, representing the harmonious relationship between the country's diverse highlands and coastal regions. A majestic Andean condor sits atop the shield, wings outstretched to symbolize the power, greatness, and bravery of the Ecuadorian people. The emblem includes a gold sun surrounded by the zodiac signs for Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and Cancer, marking the significant months of the 1845 March Revolution.
