The archipelago is famously known as the Perfume Islands because it is the world's leading producer of ylang-ylang essence. This fragrant oil is a critical base for high-end global perfumes, including the iconic Chanel No. 5. In addition to these floral scents, the islands are major exporters of cloves and vanilla, making the air in local markets remarkably aromatic.
Currency
The official currency is the Comorian franc, denoted by the ISO code KMF. Historically, the currency has been pegged to the French franc and later the Euro, providing a level of monetary stability through a unique financial agreement with the French Treasury that dates back to the colonial era.
Flag symbolism
The four horizontal stripes of yellow, white, red, and blue represent the islands of Mohéli, Mayotte, Anjouan, and Grande Comore respectively. A green triangle on the hoist side contains a white crescent and four stars, which symbolize the nation's Islamic heritage. The four stars also mirror the stripes, reinforcing the unity between the primary islands of the archipelago.
Emblem history
The national seal features a central crescent moon similar to the flag, which is surrounded by the country's name in both French and Arabic. In the center, a sunburst with eight rays shines over the crescent, symbolizing a bright and enlightened future. This central design is bordered by two olive branches, a traditional international symbol of peace that was adopted upon the nation's recognition by the global community.
