Currency

The official currency is the Congolese Franc, which carries the ISO code CDF. While the franc was first introduced in 1887 under colonial rule, it was replaced by the Zaire for several decades before being reintroduced in 1998 following the fall of the Mobutu regime. Interestingly, due to high inflation during the late 20th century, US dollars still circulate widely and are frequently used alongside the local currency for large transactions.

Flag symbolism

The sky blue background of the flag represents peace and hope for a tranquil future in a nation that has seen significant conflict. A large yellow star in the canton signifies the bright future of the country and the unity of its diverse people. The diagonal red stripe across the center symbolizes the blood shed by the country's martyrs during their long struggle for independence. This red band is bordered by thin yellow stripes, which represent the vast mineral wealth and natural resources found throughout the land.

Emblem history

The national emblem features a leopard's head at its center, which has historically been a symbol of power and authority for Congolese leaders. Flanking the leopard are an elephant tusk to the left and a spear to the right, representing the nation's rich wildlife and the readiness to defend its sovereignty. These elements rest upon a stone foundation, which bears the national motto 'Justice, Paix, Travail' (Justice, Peace, Work). This current design was officially adopted in 2006, replacing previous versions that featured diverse imagery such as lions and farm tools during various political transitions.
