Cameroon is often referred to as Africa in Miniature because it exhibits all the major climates and types of vegetation found across the entire continent. You can find everything from white sandy beaches and tropical rainforests to mountainous savannas and arid deserts within its borders. It is also one of the few places in the world where both English and French are official languages as a legacy of its dual colonial heritage. Additionally, the country is home to Mount Cameroon, one of Africa's largest and most active volcanoes which locals call Mongo ma Ndemi.
Currency
The national currency is the Central African CFA Franc, identified by the ISO code XAF. It was established in 1945 following the Bretton Woods Conference to replace the French Equatorial African Franc in various territories. Interestingly, the currency is shared with five other independent states in Central Africa and was originally pegged to the French Franc before transitioning to the Euro.
Flag symbolism
The flag of Cameroon utilizes the Pan-African colors of green, red, and yellow in a vertical tricolor design. The green represents the lush vegetation of the southern forests, while the yellow symbolizes the sun and the northern savannas. The central red stripe stands for unity, and the five-pointed gold star in the middle is known as the Star of Unity. This specific design was adopted in 1975, making Cameroon the second country to use the Pan-African color scheme after Ghana.
Emblem history
The coat of arms of Cameroon features a central shield flanked by two crossed fasces, which serve as symbols of the republic's authority. Behind the shield, an outline map of the country is depicted, overlaid by a scale of justice to represent equality and the rule of law. Above the shield, the national motto of Peace, Work, Fatherland is written in both French and English. This emblem was modified several times since independence, most notably in 1984 when the positions of the stars on the shield were updated to reflect changes in the national flag.
