Azerbaijan is home to nearly half of the world's mud volcanoes, which erupt with cold mud instead of molten lava. These unique geological formations create a lunar-like landscape and are often associated with the country's rich underground gas reserves. Deep within the Gobustan National Park, these vents bubble constantly and occasionally shoot flames into the sky, earning the nation its nickname as the Land of Fire. This subterranean activity has historically influenced local fire-worshipping traditions and modern architectural designs like the Flame Towers.
Currency
The official currency of the country is the Azerbaijani Manat, identified by the ISO code AZN. Interestingly, the modern generation of banknotes was designed by Robert Kalina, the same artist responsible for the original design of the Euro banknotes, which is why the two currencies share similar aesthetic features and security elements.
Flag symbolism
The horizontal blue stripe represents the Turkic heritage of the Azerbaijani people and their historical roots. The central red band symbolizes the ongoing commitment to modernization, democracy, and social progress within the nation. The bottom green stripe signifies Islamic civilization and the religious cultural identity of the population. In the center, the white crescent and eight-pointed star denote the eight branches of the Turkic people, appearing together as a symbol of unity and national pride.
Emblem history
The national emblem features a large eight-pointed star encircling a stylized flame, which is a direct reference to the name of the country and its ancient fire-worshipping heritage. Within the central flame, the name of Allah is written in Arabic script, blending religious tradition with national identity. The emblem is framed by a stalk of wheat representing agricultural wealth and a branch of oak symbolizing the strength and longevity of the state. It was officially adopted in 1993, restoring a design originally created during the short-lived democratic republic of 1918.
