Despite having no permanent residents, these territories are home to the largest colony of King Penguins in the world on the Crozet Islands. The region serves as a massive open-air laboratory where scientists conduct critical research on magnetic poles and climate change. Interestingly, the territory is administered from the island of Réunion, thousands of kilometers away, rather than from within the territory itself.
Currency
The official currency is the Euro (EUR), reflecting the territory's political integration with France. Before the adoption of the Euro, the French franc was used, and although the islands have no permanent commercial economy, special commemorative coins and postage stamps are highly prized by global collectors.
Flag symbolism
The flag features the French Tricolour in the canton, signifying its status as an overseas territory of France. The field is a deep blue, representing the vast maritime zones and the southern oceans surrounding the various archipelagos. Centered on the fly are the white interlaced letters T-A-A-F, representing the French name of the territory, surrounded by five stars which denote the five distinct districts within the administrative unit.
Emblem history
The emblem is a coat of arms featuring a shield divided into four quarters that represent the different natural resources and wildlife of the islands. It includes a Kerguelen cabbage, a unique plant species that was historically vital for preventing scurvy among visiting sailors, and a southern elephant seal. The shield is supported by two silver lobsters, highlighting the significance of the local fishing industry and the rich marine biodiversity of the southern latitudes.
