Andorra is the only country in the world where the official language is Catalan, though Spanish and French are also widely spoken. Unique among nations, its heads of state are two foreign leaders: the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell in Spain. This co-principality arrangement has existed since the 13th century, making it one of the oldest stable executive systems in history. Despite being a small mountain nation, it attract millions of visitors annually for its high-altitude skiing and duty-free shopping status.
Currency
The official currency is the Euro, identified by the ISO code EUR. Before adopting the Euro, Andorra never had a legal currency of its own and instead used both the Spanish peseta and the French franc simultaneously. Although not a member of the European Union, the nation maintains a special monetary agreement that allows it to mint its own unique Andorran euro coins.
Flag symbolism
The vertical tricolor of blue, yellow, and red is designed to reflect Andorra's historical ties to its neighbors. The blue and red sections are borrowed from the flag of France, while the yellow and red elements represent the flag of Spain. The central yellow stripe is slightly wider than the side stripes to accommodate the national coat of arms. This blend of imagery highlights the unique political balance kept between the two nations that share its borders.
Emblem history
The coat of arms featured in the center of the flag combines symbols from four different historical entities. The top-left quadrant shows the miter and crozier of the Bishop of Urgell, while the top-right displays the three red bars of the Counts of Foix. In the lower half, the four red stripes of Catalonia sit beside the two cows representing the Province of Béarn. Below the shield, the national motto 'Virtus Unita Fortior' states that virtue united is stronger, emphasizing the country's defensive reliance on its dual protectors.
