The coat of arms of Åland features a deer on a red background, adorned with a crown and surrounded by roses. The deer is an ancient heraldic symbol associated with the islands dating back to medieval times. The roses represent the historical County of Åland. The emblem predates Finnish independence and reflects the islands' long history as a distinct region, having passed between Swedish and Russian rule before becoming part of Finland in 1921 following a League of Nations ruling that disappointed many islanders who had hoped to reunite with Sweden.
